The Short Version

The coating doesn’t fail. The bond does. Diamond grinding opens the concrete so the epoxy can grip it. Acid etching is the cheaper shortcut that leaves a weak, residue-coated surface. Tru Coat grinds every floor, and that single decision is why our coatings stay down.

Ask any epoxy installer what separates a floor that lasts twenty years from one that peels in eighteen months, and the answer is almost never the product. Both floors might use the same resin. The difference is what happened to the concrete before the first drop of epoxy ever touched it. Surface prep is the single biggest predictor of whether a coating lasts, and it is also the step most likely to be skipped or faked.

There are two ways most contractors prepare a slab: mechanical diamond grinding and chemical acid etching. They are not equivalent. One is the professional standard. The other is a corner cut to win a low bid. Here is the honest comparison, from a shop that grinds every floor it touches.

Why a coating peels in the first place

Bare concrete looks solid, but the top layer is a problem. As concrete cures, fine cement particles and water rise to the surface and form a weak, powdery skin called laitance. It feels smooth and clean, and it is barely attached to the slab underneath. Pour epoxy over laitance and you have glued your new floor to a layer of dust. The epoxy holds. The dust lets go. That is the delamination you see when a coating sheets up off a garage floor in big flakes.

A coating bonds by mechanical grip, not magic. It needs a profile to lock into, the way grout needs the rough back of a tile. Remove the laitance, expose clean aggregate, and open a texture the epoxy can key into, and the bond becomes stronger than the concrete itself.

What diamond grinding actually does

Diamond grinding uses a heavy planetary machine fitted with diamond-segment tooling to abrade the surface. It shears off the laitance, removes old sealers and contaminants, and cuts a consistent texture across the entire slab. Crews in the trade measure that texture as a Concrete Surface Profile, or CSP, on a scale from CSP-1 (smooth, like 100-grit sandpaper) up to CSP-9 (heavily scarified). Most epoxy and polyaspartic systems want roughly CSP-2 to CSP-3, the texture of medium sandpaper. Grinding is the only prep method that lets you hit that number reliably and prove it.

It is also clean. Modern grinders connect to HEPA dust shrouds, so the work happens dry with almost no airborne silica, no acid to neutralize, and nothing left but bare, profiled concrete. Grinding reads the slab as it goes, so soft spots, hollow areas, and old adhesive surface before coating instead of after.

What acid etching does, and does not, do

Acid etching pours a diluted acid, usually muriatic, across the slab to chemically eat into the surface. On paper it sounds like a tidy substitute for grinding. In practice it is unreliable for three reasons.

First, it is inconsistent. Etching depends on the acid hitting fresh, uniform concrete, but real slabs are not uniform. Dense troweled areas, oil-stained patches, and sealed sections all react differently, leaving a patchy profile. Second, it leaves residue: salts and loosened material that must be rinsed and neutralized completely, or the epoxy bonds to the residue instead of the slab. Third, it does almost nothing for laitance and oil, which is exactly what needs to go.

It is also dangerous to do well. Muriatic acid fumes, splashes, and wastewater all require careful handling. For a DIY kit, the etch step is where most failures start: the floor looks etched, feels rough enough, and still has no real profile under a residue film.

Prep is more than texture

Profiling is the headline, but a proper prep day does more. We grind to remove laitance and open the CSP, then handle what acid can never touch. Moisture gets tested, because vapor pushing up through a slab will lift any coating. Cracks and spalls get chased out, filled with a rigid polymer, and ground flush so they don’t telegraph through the finish later. None of this happens if you pour resin straight over an etched slab.

What to ask before you sign

You do not need to become a flooring expert to protect yourself. You need four questions. Ask whether they grind or acid etch, and listen for a straight answer. Ask what CSP they prep to. Ask how they handle moisture testing and crack repair. Ask what their warranty covers, because a company that genuinely grinds will stand behind the bond. Surface Prep FAQ

Can you just acid etch instead of grinding to save money?

We don’t, and we won’t quote it that way. Etching leaves an inconsistent profile and residue that compromises the bond. Grinding is the standard we hold every job to.

What is CSP and what should mine be?

Concrete Surface Profile is a measured scale of how rough the prepped slab is. Most epoxy systems bond best at roughly CSP-2 to CSP-3, the feel of medium sandpaper. Grinding lets us hit and verify that across the floor.

Is diamond grinding messy or dusty in my garage?

No. Our grinders run with HEPA dust collection, so the prep is dry and nearly dust-free. There is no acid slurry to clean up and no fumes lingering in the space.

My slab has cracks and a few chipped spots. Does that ruin it?

No. After grinding we chase out cracks and spalls, fill them with a rigid repair polymer, and grind them flush before coating. Repair is part of proper prep.

Do you check for moisture before coating?

Yes. Vapor moving up through concrete will lift any coating, no matter how good the bond. We test moisture during prep and address it before resin goes down.
