Residential Flake Epoxy Flooring
Flake epoxy is the most popular residential coating system in the industry, and for good reason. Decorative vinyl chips broadcast into wet epoxy create a multi-toned, textured surface that hides imperfections, resists heavy traffic, and delivers exceptional traction. Tru Coat Epoxy and Painting installs premium flake epoxy systems across the greater Philadelphia area with the quality and precision that comes from Don Resin certification.
What Is Flake Epoxy?
Flake epoxy, also called chip epoxy or vinyl chip flooring, is a multi-layer coating system that incorporates decorative vinyl flakes into the epoxy surface. The flakes come in hundreds of color blends, from neutral earth tones to bold custom mixes, and they are broadcast by hand into wet epoxy at controlled densities to achieve the exact look you want. A light broadcast creates a speckled effect that shows the base color underneath. A full broadcast creates a seamless, granite-like texture where the flakes completely cover the surface. Every density between those two extremes is available, giving you complete control over the final appearance.
Beyond aesthetics, flake epoxy is one of the most practical flooring systems available. The textured surface provides natural slip resistance even when wet. The multi-toned color pattern hides dust, light dirt, and minor scratches better than solid-color coatings. The vinyl chips add physical thickness to the floor, increasing impact resistance. And the clear topcoat seals everything into a seamless, non-porous surface that resists chemicals, stains, and moisture. It is the ideal balance of beauty and function for residential spaces that see real daily use.
Popular Flake Epoxy Applications
Garages
Flake epoxy is the top choice for garage floors. The textured surface hides tire marks and oil drips while providing traction for walking on wet shoes. Full-broadcast flake creates a showroom-quality finish that transforms any garage into a functional extension of your home.
Basements
Basements benefit from flake epoxy’s moisture resistance and seamless finish. The coating seals concrete against humidity and minor moisture intrusion while creating a finished surface that feels warm and inviting. Popular for recreation rooms, home gyms, and workshops.
Laundry Rooms
Laundry rooms take constant water exposure from splashes, leaks, and condensation. Flake epoxy creates a waterproof barrier that protects concrete from moisture damage while providing a slip-resistant surface and easy cleanup for detergent spills.
Mudrooms & Entryways
High-traffic entryways need flooring that can handle muddy boots, wet umbrellas, and road salt without staining. Flake epoxy’s textured surface provides grip, hides dirt between cleanings, and wipes down easily with a mop and mild detergent.
Workshops
Workshops demand flooring that resists dropped tools, chemical spills, and heavy equipment. Flake epoxy’s multi-layer construction absorbs impact better than bare concrete or thin coatings. The seamless surface makes it easy to find dropped hardware and sweep up debris.
Pool Houses & Patios
Outdoor-adjacent spaces like pool houses and covered patios benefit from flake epoxy’s UV-stable topcoats and exceptional slip resistance. The decorative chips add visual warmth that bare concrete lacks, creating an inviting transition between indoor and outdoor living.
Our Flake Epoxy Process
Every flake epoxy installation begins with thorough surface preparation. We diamond grind the concrete to remove any existing coatings, sealers, or contaminants and to create the mechanical profile needed for permanent adhesion. Cracks are filled with flexible polyurea, and damaged areas are repaired with fast-setting concrete patch. We test the concrete’s moisture content to ensure it falls within acceptable levels for epoxy bonding.
After prep, we apply a pigmented epoxy base coat in the color you have selected. While the base coat is still wet, we hand-broadcast the decorative vinyl chips at the agreed density, from light scatter to full rejection broadcast. Once the flake layer has cured, we scrape the surface to remove any loose chips and create a uniform texture. The final step is one or two coats of clear polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat. This locks the flakes in place and provides the UV protection, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance that make the system last.
The complete process takes 2 to 3 days, with light foot traffic in 24 hours and full vehicle traffic in 5 to 7 days. We offer your choice of gloss, satin, or matte topcoat finishes. Flake Color Options
We carry flake blends from the industry’s top manufacturers, with hundreds of standard color combinations available. Popular residential choices include natural stone tones like saddle tan and fall brown for warm interiors, cool blends like glacier gray and midnight for modern spaces, and custom mixes that match your existing decor. Flake sizes range from small quarter-inch chips for a refined granite look to larger half-inch and three-quarter-inch chips for bolder visual texture. During your consultation, we bring sample boards so you can see exactly how different blends look against your concrete and in your room’s lighting conditions.
We can also create fully custom blends by combining chips from multiple standard colors. This is a popular option for homeowners who want a floor that coordinates precisely with their kitchen cabinets, bathroom tile, or accent walls. Custom blends are available at no additional charge for standard chip sizes. Visit our gallery to see flake epoxy projects we have completed across the greater Philadelphia area.
