Professional Microcement

Microcement is the material that is transforming modern interiors across North America — and Tru Coat Epoxy and Painting is one of the few contractors in the greater Philadelphia area certified to install it properly. This seamless, ultra-thin cement coating creates a contemporary European aesthetic on floors, walls, countertops, showers, and virtually any surface in your home or business.

About Microcement

Microcement is a polymer-modified cement coating applied in multiple ultra-thin layers (typically 2-3mm total thickness) that creates a seamless, grout-free surface with genuine texture and depth. Unlike tile, there are no grout lines to clean or maintain. Unlike paint, microcement has real tactile depth and substance. Unlike epoxy, microcement works beautifully on vertical surfaces including walls, shower enclosures, and backsplashes. As a Microcement Certified applicator, Tru Coat brings the technical expertise that proper microcement installation demands. This is not a forgiving material — improper substrate preparation, incorrect mixing ratios, or rushed application creates cracks, bubbles, and delamination. Our certification covers the full range of microcement application: substrate evaluation, primer selection, mesh reinforcement, multi-layer application sequences, pigment integration, and protective sealer application. The result is the seamless, luxurious finish that microcement is known for — executed without the failures that untrained applicators produce.

Our Process

Microcement installation is a multi-day, multi-layer process. We prepare the substrate, apply primer and fiberglass mesh reinforcement, then build up 4 to 6 layers of microcement in alternating directions for uniform coverage. Each layer is hand-troweled and sanded between coats. Once the desired appearance is achieved, we apply penetrating sealer and protective topcoat. The entire process typically takes 5 to 7 days for a single room, longer for multi-surface projects.

Every project begins with a free consultation. Call (445) 444-2879 or visit our contact page to schedule yours. We serve the entire greater Philadelphia area including communities like Wayne, Haverford, Villanova, Doylestown, and Philadelphia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is microcement?
Microcement is a polymer-modified cement coating applied in ultra-thin layers (2-3mm total) that creates a seamless, grout-free surface. It can be applied to floors, walls, countertops, showers, bathtubs, staircases, and furniture. The finished product has genuine texture and depth — it is not paint, it is not epoxy, it is a completely different material category. Think of it as a thin, decorative concrete layer that can be applied over almost any existing surface.
What surfaces can microcement be applied to?
Microcement can be applied over existing tile, concrete, plaster, drywall, wood, and even some types of natural stone. It works on both horizontal surfaces (floors, countertops) and vertical surfaces (walls, shower enclosures, backsplashes). Proper substrate preparation and primer selection are critical — this is why certification matters. Not every surface is suitable, and we evaluate yours during the free consultation.
Is microcement waterproof?
Yes, when properly sealed. We apply penetrating sealers and protective topcoats that make the finished surface waterproof. This is what allows microcement to be used in showers, bathtubs, and other wet areas. The sealer also provides stain resistance against food, wine, coffee, and household chemicals. Periodic resealing (every 3 to 5 years) maintains the waterproof barrier.
How durable is microcement?
Properly installed and sealed microcement is highly durable. On floors, it handles foot traffic, furniture, and normal residential use without issue. On countertops, it resists heat, stains, and daily kitchen use. Microcement is not as hard as tile or natural stone, so it can develop a natural patina over time that many homeowners find appealing. For high-wear areas, we apply additional topcoat layers for extra protection.
Why does microcement need a certified installer?
Microcement is unforgiving of installation errors. Incorrect substrate prep leads to cracking. Wrong mixing ratios cause discoloration and weakness. Rushed application produces an uneven, blotchy finish. Improper sealing results in water damage. Our Microcement Certification covers every aspect of proper installation — from substrate evaluation through final sealing — ensuring the beautiful, durable finish that microcement is known for.
